Sister Share: Annie Brown, Upspiral Creative & Pique Gallery

It took Annie Brown only 2 months to transform a group of families (aged 9-54) into a Border Morris dance troupe complete with light up costumes and choreographed dance. The dance group debuted in the inaugural BLINK Festival parade. Many from the group list that as one of their highlights of 2017.

Annie is a nontraditional instructor who has taught art at Baker Hunt, the Super Saturday Program and The Art House; started a Sewing Club at Holmes Middle School; taught dance for Pones Inc and Engineering Club for Classroom Antics; and teaches a variety of subjects at FKaT Cooperative. Most recently she taught stop motion animation and video production for Classroom Antics’ day camps.

Annie describes the classes she designs as TAM classes-Tinker Artist Maker. Her emphasis is on providing enough information to get students started and then get out of their way, supporting them as they explore new possibilities. Her favorite quote is: “We are not here to do what has already been done.” (Robert Henri, The Art Spirit). Her motto is: I like to help people do cool things.

These women inspire me and fuel me to keep going. Do you have something cool happening in your life? Email me! I would love to hear about it and feature it here.
